This change marks a pivotal moment as Manitou officially becomes part of Tacoma.
Manitou Joining the City of Tacoma: What You Need to Know
Manitou’s location on the southwest corner of Tacoma, near Lakewood Drive West and 66th Street West, played a crucial role in its annexation. It aligns with regional, county, and city planning policies, notably under the State Growth Management Act (GMA). This strategic move reflects efforts to promote cohesive urban development and efficient regional governance.
With the annexation, several key changes come into effect across various aspects of local governance. Manitou’s integration into Tacoma triggers significant changes, spanning administration, emergency services, taxes, fees, and utility services. This transformation reshapes Manitou’s civic landscape under Tacoma’s governance. Residents of Manitou now have access to Tacoma’s elected representative and neighborhood council program. It is fostering increased community engagement and representation within the city. This enhancement underscores Tacoma’s commitment to inclusive governance and community involvement.
While some aspects remain unchanged, such as school districts and utility providers, Manitou businesses will see notable adjustments. They will now adhere to Tacoma’s licensing, taxation, and regulatory framework, marking a shift in financial obligations and compliance requirements. Although business license fees may increase initially, Tacoma has implemented tiered rates to safeguard smaller businesses. Additionally, businesses will be exempt from Tacoma’s business and occupation tax until the fourth year of annexation.
This transition is the culmination of a detailed agreement between Tacoma and Pierce County, finalized in late 2021. With Manitou’s integration into Tacoma, the city will now manage services such as licensing, permits, solid waste management, and parking regulation. Pierce County previously oversaw these matters. The change should streamline service delivery and enhance civic amenities for Manitou residents and businesses.
In essence, Manitou’s annexation represents a step towards greater cohesion and efficiency in regional governance. It paves the way for heightened growth and development. This integration fosters a stronger unity among stakeholders, promising a brighter future for all involved.
