  • Moving With Kids: Finding the Right School in Seattle

Moving to a new city is a big decision on its own. Add children to the picture, and suddenly there are a dozen more things to think about.

Will they like their new school? Will they make friends? How long will the commute be? Is the neighborhood a good fit for our family?

These are the kinds of questions many parents find themselves asking when planning a move to Seattle. And honestly, choosing a home isn’t just about finding the right house. For families with children, it’s also about finding a place where everyone can feel comfortable, connected, and at home.

That’s why it’s worth putting schools near the top of your moving checklist.

Start Looking Before You Find the House

It’s easy to fall in love with a home first and think about the school afterward. But when you’re moving with kids, it can be helpful to do things in the opposite order.

Before getting too attached to a particular property, take a look at the schools serving that neighborhood. Check attendance boundaries, enrollment requirements, transportation options, and whether the school has the programs your child needs.

School boundaries and enrollment policies can change, so always verify the latest information directly with the school district.

A little research upfront can save you from an unpleasant surprise later.

The Best School Isn’t Always the One With the Highest Rating

Ratings and rankings can be useful, but they don’t tell you everything you need to know.

Every child is different. What works wonderfully for one family may not be the right fit for another. Maybe your child loves sports and extracurricular activities.

Maybe they need a strong arts program. Perhaps smaller classes, student support, or a particular academic program matters more to your family.

Instead of asking, “Is this a good school?”, try asking, “Is this the right school for my child?”

That small change in perspective can make the search much more meaningful.

Don’t Just Look at the School—Look Around It

One of my favorite pieces of advice for families relocating is to spend some time in the neighborhood before making a decision.

Drive through the area during the morning rush. See what the commute actually feels like. Visit a nearby park. Grab a coffee. Walk around and imagine what an ordinary Tuesday might look like for your family.

Because you’re not just choosing a school.

You’re choosing where your children might ride their bikes, where you’ll pick up groceries after work, where you’ll spend Saturday mornings, and where your family will start building new memories.

Those little details often matter just as much as what you see on a school website.

Think About Your Everyday Life

A school can look perfect on paper, but how will it work with your family’s routine?

Think about school drop-offs and pickups, your work schedule, transportation, after-school activities, and how far you’ll need to travel for the things your family does regularly.

A home that looks perfect but adds an hour to your daily commute may feel very different once school, work, appointments, and activities are part of the picture.

The goal is to find a balance that works not just on move-in day, but months and years down the road.

Give Your Kids a Voice

Moving can be exciting for children, but it can also be overwhelming. They’re leaving behind familiar faces, routines, and places they know.

Whenever possible, let them be part of the process.

Show them pictures of the new neighborhood. Take them along when you visit schools. Talk about things they’re excited about—and things they might be nervous about.

Even small things, like letting them help choose their new favorite park or explore the neighborhood with you, can help Seattle start feeling a little more familiar.

A New Home Is Only Part of the Move

When you’re moving with children, you’re not simply looking for a house. You’re looking for a place where your family can settle in, build friendships, find a routine, and eventually feel like they belong.

That’s why taking the time to research schools and neighborhoods before making a decision is so important.

The right move isn’t necessarily about finding the biggest house or the most impressive school rating. It’s about finding a community that fits your family, your lifestyle, and the life you want to build together.

And sometimes, that’s what turns a new house into a place you can truly call HOME.
