  • Seattle, Orlando, and New York Reign as 2024’s Hottest Labor Day Destinations
Labor Day Destinations

Labor Day is a popular travel weekend as people look for a final getaway before the end of summer. Seattle happens to be among the top spots people travel over the holiday weekend. Read on to learn more about the top Labor Day destinations of 2024.

What are the Top Labor Day Destinations of 2024?

As Labor Day approached, travelers flocked to Seattle, making it the top destination for the long weekend. AAA booking data revealed a nearly 30% increase in bookings from the previous year. The Pacific Northwest city, which had also topped the charts in 2023, continued to attract those seeking an urban escape.

Alaska’s scenic allure has also captured travelers’ imaginations, with Anchorage and Juneau debuting in the top ten Labor Day destinations. The surge in popularity is largely attributed to strong demand for Alaska cruises during the late summer season.

Overall, domestic travel for Labor Day weekend has seen a notable 9% increase compared to last year. Travel costs also decreased slightly by 2%. In addition to Seattle, other favored destinations include Orlando, New York, Boston, Las Vegas, Denver, Chicago, and San Francisco. For many families, this long weekend represents a final opportunity for a getaway before the school year begins.

Travelers benefited from lower gas prices this year. The national average for Labor Day weekend in 2023 was $3.81 per gallon. However, motorists saw 2024 Labor Day prices settle around $3.50. Despite a steady demand for summer road trips, overall gas consumption has decreased due to shifting post-pandemic driving habits. For electric vehicle drivers, AAA now offers weekly updates on Level 2 commercial EV charging costs.

On the international front, Labor Day travel has dipped by 4% compared to last year, with a significant 11% cost increase. European cities dominate the list of top international destinations, owning eight out of the top ten spots. Travelers planning to rent a car abroad should be aware of the International Driving Permit (IDP) requirement in some countries. Countries like Italy and Spain require these translated licenses for foreign drivers.

With these insights, travelers can better plan their Labor Day adventures. This information can ensure a smooth trip, whether heading to Seattle and New York or taking a European escape.
